Today I will be reviewing Mother and Sons, by Emerson Eggerichs, PhD. This book was sent to me by the Icon Media Group in exchange for a free copy of the book. This book is dedicated to the relationship between a Christian mother and a Christian son. His entire premise is based on the idea that men "filter their world through the respect grid"(x). He uses acronyms to help mothers to understand the need for respect in a boy's life. Eggerichs also uses many samples from people that have written in to him or have come up to him at one of his conferences. If you have read Eggerichs' very popular book, Love and Respect, then you may find this book to be a bit redundant. I however thought this book was a better use of my time than Love and Respect was. Love and Respect didn't give any real steps on how to go about actually communicating respect. In Mother and Sons however, the chapter Seeing the Man in the Boy, Eggerichs does an excellent job of explaining practical ways to show respect to your child through his acronym C.HA.I.R.S. from the book Love and Respect.
Overall I give Mother and Sons a B+ review. It is a good tool to have in your toolbox for parenting boys. I enjoyed reading through some of the more practical tips strewn throughout the book. I would like to see more practical tips to show what positive respect looks like rather than just a bunch of examples of disrespect.
