Welcome to Title Tuesday, my favorite day of the week! This day is dedicated to book suggestions, news, cartoons, and reviews. I write this portion of my blog because I am a big believer in the motivational speaker Charlie Jones' quote which says, "You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” I try to meet as many new people as possible and to read everything I can. This is my way of sharing that information with you. If you are interested in understanding my rating system for books you can read my Book Review Explanation here and What I Believe here. If you want to check out what I am currently reading or what I want to read next, friend me on Goodreads!
Today I want to tell you about The Blessing of Humility by Jerry Bridges. This is one of the book on Jami Balmet's 2018 Women's Reading Challenge. I have to admit when I first saw this book on the reading list I wasn't excited about it. I was afraid it was going to be super dry, plus the idea of being taught humility is, well... humbling.
I can honestly say that Jerry Bridges really surprised me with this book. He takes the Beatitudes (found in Matthew 5:3-12) and breaks each of them down in to the most simple elements. This book inspired me to take a closer look at The Beatitudes, so I created a 2018 Winter Scripture Memory Plan with them.
I have to confess that before reading this book I had a really misguided view of the Beatitudes. Each of theses qualities are not earthly qualities but rather, they are Christ focused. God is not saying that those who are in mourning (like, for a loved one) are comforted, He is talking about mourning for our sins! When He talks about mercy, He is talking about showing mercy to those that have wronged us, just as Christ shows to us. These concepts were mind blowing for me!
I would have to give The Blessing of Humility a solid A+. I would recommend that every Christian take a look at this book when studying the Beatitudes. It really does help to make sense of the message Christ delivers to us in this first portion of His sermon on the mount.
