Today I want to share with you about a special book series that I stumbled upon by accident... The Maggie Hope Mystery Series. I started reading the first book in the series because Winston Churchill's name was in the title. For any of you that don't know this, I am a bit obsessed with Winston Churchill, so the title Mr. Churchill's Secretary naturally caught my attention.
Maggie Hope, an orphan raised in America by her aunt, is introduced to us as a secretary for Mr. Churchill during the early parts of World War Two.
Through the series we see her
care for Princess Elizabeth,
go undercover in Germany and occupied Paris,
find long lost family,
travel to America,
befriend Elanor Roosevelt,
dive our of airplanes,
fight on submarines,
love often,
and be captured multiple times.
I can honestly say that there were twists and turns in these books that I never saw coming. When I first realized that Mr. Churchill's Secretary was part of a series I was afraid it would be formulaic and easy to predict. I can assure you that Susan Elia MacNeal does a phenomenal job of keeping readers on their toes.
This is the correct order to read the books in. If you click on the title you will be taken to the goodreads page for each individual book.
Mr. Churchill's Secretary
Princess Elizabeth's Spy
His Majesty's Hope
The Prime Minister's Secret Agent
Mrs. Roosevelt’s Confidante
The Queen's Accomplice
The Paris Spy
The Prisoner in the Castle
The next book in the series is The King's Justice and it is due out in 2020. I was DEVASTATED when I finished The Prisoner in the Castle in early 2020 only to learn that the next book wasn't out yet! I am ready so incredibly for it.
Overall, I give The Maggie Hope Mystery Series by Susan Elia McNeal a four star review. It is a wonderful series that will keep you frantically turning pages to find out what happens next. The characters are dynamic and interesting while not being overly dramatic. A note to my more conservative readers... these books do contain premarital sex (in a fade to black kind of way), a homosexual character, and difficult topics. MacNeal does an excellent job of handling these topics gracefully and with poise.
