Abortion Access Month

My birthday is today.

As I think about this day I think about my mother. She got pregnant with me (out of wedlock) and married my father after she discovered she was pregnant. The two divorced a short time later but that is a story for another day....

What I am thinking about instead is the fact that for my mother abortion might have been an easier option. She wouldn't have had to drop out of school and her bright future would have remained on course. All she would have had to do was to go into a clinic and "have the situation taken care of". Instead, my mother chose to have me. We haven't had an easy life, in fact I haven't seen or heard from her in almost a year, but she made the choice to give me life. I got a chance, when so many other children do not.

September is Abortion Access Month.
September 14th is the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children
September 28th is the Global Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion.
September 30th is the 38th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment (the federal ban on funding abortion).

I am going to just come out and say it. I do not condone or support abortion. Based on my faith and religious principles, abortion is murder. You can call the child a fetus, you can squabble over the date at which it is legal/humane to perform abortion; but at the end of the operation regardless of jargon used or the date at which it was performed, a life was taken.

We (the Christian church) need to stand up for the voiceless. We need to be there for the expecting mothers (whatever their story may be) and demonstrate Christ-like love. Most of all, we need to be on our knees in prayer for the young women making these life-altering choices, for the politicians setting the rules and regulations, and the country publicly debating this life and death decision.
