Welcome
to Title Tuesday,
my favorite day of the week! This day is dedicated to book suggestions and
reviews. I write this portion of my blog because I am a
big believer in the motivational speaker Charlie Jones'
quote which says, "You will be the same person in five years as you are
today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” With that being
said, let us jump in and get started.
Sex and the Single
Christian Girl... with a title like that this book is sure
to be interesting. Marian Jordan Ellis wrote this book with the intent of
encouraging single women to stay pure as they wait for marriage. While
I believe that Mrs.
Ellis' goal is admirable I feel that she fell a bit short.
The first several chapters of
the book is Ellis stating over and over that purity is important and that we
should all aspire to it. At one point Ellis writes that “Sexual purity was
tough, but what kept me fighting was my desire to honor Christ. I wanted to
stand before Him unashamed”. This gave me the feeling that if you have sexual
sin in your past, you can’t stand unashamed at the feet of Christ and that is
SO wrong. That is in fact the power of the redemptive blood of Christ. Even if
you have sin in your past Christ’s blood will wash it clean and you are then sanctified.
Although I agree with the premise of this book, I was slightly disappointed in it. I would have liked to have seen
Mrs. Ellis give some new tools or ideas for staying away from sexual
temptation. Unfortunately she used all the regular answers, just with super
cute wording.
All in all, I rate this book a
B+. It is by no means a bad book. I feel that Sex and the Single Christian Girl is a great idea for a young
preteen girl. But I think anyone who already has had a sexual experience outside
of marriage will find this book to be a bit condemning, rather than helpful. All
kitschy language aside, sexual purity is a serious issue for many Christian
women. I would like to see Ellis tackle the subject again and write a book with
a little more meat to it.
