Today I will be reviewing The Queen's Handmaid by Tracy L. Higley. This book is a fun romp through history. While it isn't exactly mind-blowing, the plot is stimulating and imaginative. Higley's characters are creative and unique, each with their own back-story. Although there are a few somewhat violent scenes, this book still manages to hold the reader's attention without becoming too gruesome. Overall this book is exactly what you would expect for romantic fiction.
So, if the plot is decent, the characters are good and it fits the bill, why did I give The Queen's Handmaid a C- rating? The answer is simple. This book did not fit with my standards for Christian literature. You can read more about my standards for book reviews here. Sadly, this book does not meet those standards. The Queen's Handmaid fits perfectly with what I loved to read before I was a Christian. If you took the inappropriate scenes out of the book, I would rate this book an A+. The story stands well on its own, it is sad that the book is ruined with garbage that detracts from the "Christian" part of the Christian Historical Fiction.
