Title Tuesday: Spirit Empowered Theology

Welcome to  Title Tuesday, my favorite day of the week! This day is dedicated to book suggestions and reviews. I write this portion of my blog because I am a big believer in the motivational speaker Charlie Jones' quote which says, "You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” I try to meet as many new people as possible and to read everything I can. Today I want to tell you about Spirit Empowered Theology by Charles Carrin, D.D. 

Before you start snoring let me explain that today is a special day for me as this is my very first time to review a book on theology. I LOVE studying about who God is and how I can understand Him better. Theology is the way that you do that. Theology literally means the study of the nature of God. Isn't it incredible that the creator of the universe allows us to get to know him personally?! When I first got Spirit Empowered Theology I was honestly a little put off by it. My first thought was, "DO we really need ANOTHER theology book floating around out there?" There are literally thousands of tomes written about who God is and why we should care. 

However, after cracking Spirit Empowered Theology  open I have to say I was wrong. 

This book is a much needed abridged version of a course on theology. You could easily spend hundreds of dollars on sets of theology books that will go far more in depth than the average Christian would need or you could have Spirit Empowered Theology on your shelf ready to be pulled off at a moments notice. This 351 page book is broken up into 18 different parts. Each part covers a common question in the faith. Carrin covers questions like: 

What is the significance of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection?
What does the Holy Spirit impart to believers?
What are foundations of the faith?

Each of these parts are then broken down in to smaller questions. Carrin uses clear and concise language to make his points he also has Biblical references for his points and arguments. I would make certain to have a dictionary on hand if you are new to the study of theology. Some of the words are things you only hear in theological discussion and debate so they may be less familiar to you than things you would hear from the pulpit at church.

In an age where longtime Christians seem to be squirmy on their faith, unsure about what is right and what is wrong, a book like Spirit Empowered Theology could be an excellent tool for a Christian looking to answer questions from someone seeking Christ. The index at the front of the book is very useful if you are trying to answer someone's specific question quickly and easily. Spirit Empowered Theology would also be a good book for someone that has been a Christian for a while but is still young in their faith and wanting to mature. Overall, I have to give Spirit Empowered Theology a solid A+ review and I think it would be a useful addition to most Christian's toolboxes.
